A man has been arrested and a firearm seized in Palmerston North.

CCTV cameras enabled Police to respond rapidly to a potentially dangerous situation early this morning.

Camera operators observed a disorder outside an establishment on The Square and alerted Police, providing real-time updates as events unfolded. During their monitoring, a man was seen allegedly presenting what appeared to be a firearm towards a group of people.

Police units quickly deployed to the area. Utilising further information from camera operators, officers located the alleged offender nearby, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Enquiries led to the recovery of a firearm, live ammunition and drugs from a nearby vehicle.

Acting Inspector Nick Lewer, Manawatū Police, says the incident was a great example of teamwork in frontline policing.

“The operators’ ability to identify risk early, communicate clearly and support officers in real time was instrumental in ensuring a safe and successful outcome,” says acting Inspector Lewer.

The operation involved a coordinated response from Police staff, including a dog team and frontline officers, who worked together to bring the situation under control and remove a firearm from the community.

“This is a great example of how proactive monitoring can prevent harm and help keep our communities safe,” says acting Inspector Lewer.

One man, aged 20, faces firearm and drug charges in Palmerston North District Court this afternoon.
