Working as a teacher aide convinced Mareko Ennor the classroom was where he wanted to be.
The 28-year-old recently graduated from EIT with a Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) and has since returned to Porritt School in Napier in a release teaching role.
Mareko graduated alongside Porritt School teacher Whaea Leah Conrad, who also completed the degree through EIT.
Before studying teaching, Mareko first studied Digital Media and Design in Wellington before later moving to Hawke’s Bay.
After beginning work as a teacher aide, he realised he wanted to pursue teaching as a career.
“I wanted to get a job that was meaningful,” Mareko says.
Mareko chose to study at EIT because of the balance between theory and practical learning offered through the programme.
“It had a really good balance of theory and practical learning.”
He says one of the highlights of the degree was seeing his confidence and capability continue to grow throughout the programme.
“I think the highlight was getting better and better at the craft of teaching. I also enjoyed the relationships you build with the kids and the staff.”
As part of his studies, Mareko was a student candidate teacher at Porritt School before returning as a qualified teacher.
Now graduated, Mareko says he is enjoying being back in the classroom and continuing to gain experience as a teacher.
EIT Head of School, Education, Social Sciences and Veterinary Nursing, Zac Anderson, says: “Mareko is a shining example of the positive outcome for graduates when they commit to and embrace the authentic partnership model that is embedded in the BTP programme at EIT”.
“We were thrilled to see Mareko cross the stage and to now be part of one of our outstanding local primary schools. Mareko’s success is a testament to his resilience, commitment and passion for teaching Hawke’s Bay tamariki.”
