A thief with a sweet tooth is facing a row of charges after allegedly helping himself to hundreds of chocolate blocks in recent months.

The recidivist shoplifter, allegedly responsible for more than $9000 worth of stolen goods in one area of Auckland alone, was arrested on the weekend.

Auckland City West Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Wayne Kitcher, says a 35-year-old man is now facing 21 charges and has been remanded in custody.

“This is an example of some exceptional Police work, particularly by one of our intelligence officers, which led to this arrest.”

Inspector Kitcher says 19 of the charges relate to various shoplifting incidents across Auckland.

“It appears this person has allegedly targeted chocolate from various supermarkets across the city.”

He says in once instance the man allegedly stole more than $3000 worth of the sweet treat from a Te Atatū supermarket.

“Police is continuing to target prolific offending against retail businesses in our communities.”

He says people can report offending as it is occurring by calling 111, or by calling 105 after the fact.

Reports can also be made online by going to https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105 or anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The 35-year-old man first appeared in the Auckland District Court at the weekend, and is due to reappear on 26 August.
