Annual number of home consents up 12 percent – news story

There were 37,534 new homes consented in Aotearoa New Zealand in the year ended February 2026, up 12 percent compared with the year ended February 2025, according to figures released by Stats NZ today.
“The annual number of new home consents has increased for seven consecutive months,” economic indicators spokesperson Michelle Feyen said.
The five regions with the highest number of new homes consented in the year ended February 2026 (comparisons are with the year ended February 2025) were:
- Auckland with 15,972 (up 16 percent)
- Canterbury with 7,721 (up 16 percent)
- Waikato with 2,992 (up 4.9 percent)
- Otago with 2,698 (up 10 percent)
- Wellington with 2,138 (up 18 percent).
