With heavy rain set to affect two highways at the top of the South Island, drivers are asked to take extra care on the roads.

The Metservice has issued Heavy Rain Warnings for tomorrow Tasman west of Motueka, the Richmond and Bryant Ranges, and the Rai Valley.

The bad weather will affect State Highway 60 in Tākaka and Golden Bay, and State Highway 6 between Nelson and Havelock.

Weather warnings are also in place for the West Coast, Central Otago, and the Queenstown Lakes District. Drivers must factor this into their plans when travelling in the South Island.

Heavy rain increases the risk of slips, rockfalls, and flooding. It is essential people drive to the conditions and be prepared for hazards on the road.

Wet roads are slippery. Reduce your speed, increase your following distance, and avoid sudden braking.  If visibility is poor, turn on your headlights. Be safe, be seen.

It also pays to check road and weather conditions before you travel. Bad weather can see roads closed at short notice:
