State Highway 2 through the Hutt Valley is set to have resurfacing work completed next month.

Roxanne Hilliard, Wellington Transport Alliance Manager, says from Sunday, 1 September until early October, work crews will resurface various sections of the highway’s northbound lanes from Korokoro to Totara Park.

“Around 1.3 lane kilometres of the highway will be resurfaced by early next year. This work improves the highway’s resilience and ensures drivers have a smoother and safer road to drive on.”

“State Highway 2 through the Hutt Valley is a critical transport link used by around 34,000 vehicles daily. It is essential it is maintained.”

“The work will improve the road’s surface, by improving skid resistance, and drainage”, Ms Hilliard says.

Depending on the weather, the work will take around five weeks to complete and will require directional night closures and local road detours. Residents in the western hills will need to use sign-posted detours to access the highway when night works are underway in their area.

Ms Hilliard says while the closures will affect traffic and create travel delays at night, overall, they’re a more efficient way of completing the works.

“Full lane closures enable multiple maintenance works to be completed at the same time, are safer for workers and road users, and less disruptive as traffic volumes are lower at night.”

More details on the specific works will be shared with the public before the work begins. All resurfacing work will be done Sunday to Thursday nights between 9 pm and 4:30 am when there are fewer vehicles on the road. No work will be done on Friday and Saturday nights.

Further resurfacing works will be carried out along State Highway 2 in the Hutt Valley, including in southbound lanes and at on and off-ramps, when the weather is warmer. We will keep the public updated on the works schedule.
