Update 7:10 am: Recovery efforts continue on State Highway 1 Weld Pass following a truck crash this morning.

Heavy towing vehicles have been sent to recover the truck, which rolled while travelling northbound through Weld Pass.

Every effort is being made to reopen the highway as quickly as possible. However, no specific timeframe for a reopening is currently available.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area, delay their travel, or use the inland route between Blenheim and Christchurch via Lewis Pass/Springs Junction/Kawatiri junction/St Arnaud.

Updates on the highway’s status can be found on the NZTA/Waka Kotahi website:

5:40am

State Highway 1 Weld Pass in Marlborough is currently closed to traffic following a truck crash early this morning.

The incident was reported shortly before 4:30 am after a truck rolled on Weld Pass.

Both lanes are blocked, and State Highway 1 is closed between Riverlands and Dashwood.

No suitable local road detours are available.

The only alternate route between Blenheim and Christchurch is via the inland route – Lewis Pass (SH7), Springs Junction to Murchison (SH7/SH65/SH6), Murchison to Kawatiri Junction (SH6), and St Arnaud Wairau Valley (SH63).

This adds approximately one hour and 40 minutes to travel times.

Drivers can expect travel delays until the crash site is cleared and the highway reopened. Drivers, especially those with  Picton ferry connections, must plan their trips accordingly and allow more time for their journeys.

Emergency services and contractors are at the scene. Further updates will be provided when the road’s status changes.
