Flood repair work on Matakana Valley Road is rocketing along with repairs to eight of the 10 slips already finished. The repairs to the slips, caused by the 2023 weather events, are expected to be completed this December.

“Matakana Valley Road is a key detour route in the event that State Highway 1 is closed in the Warkworth/Wellsford area, so making sure it’s accessible at all times is a critical part of the repair plan,” says Alan Wallace, Auckland Transport GM Road Asset Maintenance & Renewals.

“The Downer team has made great progress and is completing the works much faster than originally anticipated. Three sites were complete by mid-April 2024 and by mid-June eight sites were complete. The ninth site should be finished over the next few weeks, followed by the final site near the waterfall by the end of the year.”

Downer established a WhatsApp chat group with Matakana Valley Road residents to keep them updated and iron out any issues. When some of the repair sites required traffic lights with long phases, creating delays for motorists they wouldn’t normally encounter including the local school bus, a solution was found and communicated quickly.

The construction team was able to manually control the traffic lights from 7.30am instead of 8am, thereby enabling the local school bus to get kids to school on time.

Final line marking and barrier installation will happen once all sites are complete.

“Hooray for no more road works! A big thank you to you and your team for their quick and efficient work. And to the traffic management team for their cheery waves and smiles, no matter the weather.” – Local resident
