Drivers, especially those planning to travel in the lower North and upper South Islands of New Zealand, should be cautious on the roads tomorrow (Monday, 1 July), with bad weather forecast for these areas.

Metservice has issued a Strong Wind Watch for Wairarapa and a Strong Wind warning for Wellington for the afternoon and evening.

Trucks, vans, motorcyclists, and light vehicles must exercise caution on exposed routes. This particularly applies on exposed routes like State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill and the Wainui Saddle on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully.

In the South Island, a Strong Wind Watch will apply to inland and northern Marlborough during the day. This will affect traffic on State Highway 1 Blenheim to Picton, State Highway 6 Blenheim to Nelson, and State Highway 63 through the Wairau Valley.

A Heavy Rain Watch will also be in force for Buller and Tasman west of Motueka. This will affect State Highway 60 and Tākaka and State Highway 6 through the Buller Gorge.

Drivers in these areas must adjust their driving to the weather conditions and be prepared for potential hazards such as slips and localised flooding.

Wet roads are slippery roads – please watch your speed and following distances, and use your headlights if visibility is poor. Be seen, be safe.

Please check road and weather conditions before you travel. In bad weather, roads can be closed at short notice.
