Urgent repairs are planned for the Pelorus River Bridge on State Highway 6 tomorrow night (Thursday, 20 June).
The work is needed to replace and repair an area of damaged decking to ensure the bridge is safe for all traffic. The damage was confirmed following a safety inspection this week.
The Pelorus Bridge will be closed to traffic while the repairs are carried out. Because it is a single-lane bridge, it can’t be kept open while the decking is being fixed.
State Highway 6 will be closed to all traffic at Pelorus Bridge between 9 pm and 3 am on Thursday night while this work is carried out.
Contractors will work hard to reopen the bridge as quickly as possible. However, drivers travelling between Blenheim and Nelson should avoid the area or delay their travel.
Drivers who must travel can detour via State Highway 63 and the Wairau Valley. However, this is a significantly longer route and can add around 30 minutes to travel times. Road users must factor this into their travel plans.
NZTA/Waka Kotahi thanks road users for their patience and understanding while these essential repairs are completed.
Updates on the highway’s status can be found on the NZTA/Waka Kotahi website:
