A stretch of State Highway 2 between Whirinaki and Tutira will be closing for 3 nights in July for recovery work.
The state highway, between Tutira Store and Whirinaki, will be closed from 9pm to 5am each night between Monday 15 July and Thursday 18 July. The road will be open from 5am on Thursday 18 July.
Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) alliance crews will spend the 3 nights resurfacing the road at Devil’s Elbow, blasting of rocks in the area, completing drainage and culvert work at Devil’s Elbow and Tangoio and installing guardrails.
Regional Manager of Maintenance and Operations Rua Pani says this work requires both lanes of the road to be clear of traffic and the 3 nights of closures is the most efficient way to get the work done.
There will be road closure signs at Tutira Store north of the closure and at Whirinaki south of the closure.
Residents will have access between Whirinaki and Tangoio Settlement Road and between Tutira Store and Waikoau Road.
Emergency services will be assisted through the closure.
“NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi and TREC wants to thank road users for their patience and support over this time.
“While the closures are inconvenient, the TREC team will undertake other work at the same time, to minimise further disruption for road users.”
NZTA is aware that Hastings District Council (HDC) is conducting urgent dayworks (8:30am-3:30pm) on Waikoau Gorge Bridge. Should you be impacted by both closures please email HDC at roadingupdates@hdc.govt.nz
Following next month’s closure, road users will continue to see traffic management in place as recovery work continues on SH2.
This work is weather dependent. Contingency dates are Thursday 18 July and Friday 19 July, 9pm-5am each night.
