Auckland Council aligns with Pride Pledge

Auckland Council is taking further steps to support and develop diversity throughout the organisation this year, in a new partnership with Pride Pledge.

The commitment will enable new targets to be reached on top of those already achieved during the past five years under Rainbow Tick certification.

Since Auckland became the first New Zealand council to obtain the Rainbow Tick in 2019, numerous initiatives have been introduced to upskill staff and integrate diversity, through training opportunities and rainbow-focused events.

Councillor Richard Hills strongly supports the move to drive further momentum.

“The council should demonstrate that developing diversity is so much more than a ‘tick-box’ exercise. Organisations with an embedded culture of valuing diversity are more productive and empower people to do what they do best,” says Cr Hills.

“With discrimination, transphobia and homophobia still being a significant issue for rainbow communities here and across the world, it’s important Auckland Council shows leadership in making our workplace welcoming and inclusive for all members of staff and visitors too.”

New research shows a key driver to grow diversity within an organisation and generate a strong sense of belonging is engagement.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lead Advisor at the council, Lynette Reed, says engagement will have a renewed focus through Pride Pledge initiatives.

Pride Pledge will provide additional training, new resources and practical support to ensure progress stays on track and is meaningful, she says. 

“I’m thrilled with the opportunity to develop more support and structure within the council so that all kamaihi feel welcome and valued – and that is also reflected in how we care for Aucklanders.” 

An internal review shows support from staff for further developing diversity in daily practises.

The Pride Pledge partnership will also provide the council with the opportunity to network and learn from other organisations of a similar size and scale.

“More than 300 entities around New Zealand have committed to Pride Pledge targets, which focus on promoting the safety, visibility, and inclusion of rainbow members. We are excited to also be part of this movement,” says Mrs Reed.
