Update 8.25am – State Highway 6 has reopened following a truck crash on the Whangamoa Saddle earlier this morning

A 30 km/h temporary speed limit is in place at the crash site where safety barriers have been damaged. Drivers must follow this speed limit and take extra care when travelling through the area.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi wants to thank drivers for their patience and cooperation while emergency services and contractors worked hard to reopen the highway.

State Highway 6 is currently closed between Hira and the Rai Valley following a truck crash on the Whangamoa Saddle early this morning.

The incident was reported before five am. A truck is understood to have crashed with a barrier on the Whangamoa Hill.

Emergency services are attending the incident, and the highway is closed between Hira and the Rai Valley. No timeframe is available for when the road will reopen, and no local road detours are available.

It means there is no access for traffic on State Highway 6 between Blenheim and Nelson.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area, delay their travel, or take an alternative route via State Highway 63 and Wairau Valley/St Arnaud. This route is significantly longer and requires extra travel time.

Drivers travelling from Nelson with ferry connections in Picton must factor this closure into their travel plans.
