What once was a state highway on the Kāpiti Coast is now officially a local road.
Emma Speight, Director Regional Relationships, says the Mackays to Peka Peka revocation is now complete.
“We are dotting the final ‘i’s”, and crossing the final ‘t’s’, and handing over the old State Highway 1 route to the Kāpiti Coast District Council. It means it becomes a local road, with the Council holding ownership and responsibility for it.”
The Mackays to Peka Peka expressway was opened to the public in 2017, replacing the old State Highway 1 route. The Peka Peka to Ōtaki section of the expressway also opened in 2022
Ms Speight says the expressway has significantly benefited drivers and local communities.
“Not only is the expressway much safer, but it has also reduced congestion in Waikanae and Paraparaumu and made travel times between the Kāpiti Coast and Wellington shorter and more reliable.”
Since the expressway opened, Ms Speight says NZTA/Waka Kotahi has worked hard to get the old State Highway 1 route ready to be transferred to the Kāpiti Coast District Council.
“We have completed all of the work that was agreed with Kāpiti Coast District Council, with the new Waikanae Bridge path the final component. This has included road maintenance; installing new traffic lights and signage, and improvements for walking and cycling.”
“Now that the agreed work is finished, the road is being transferred. It remains a key alternative route if the expressway is closed, and an important route for communities in Kāpiti, but is no longer a State Highway,” Ms Speight says
“I also want to thank the community and the Kāpiti Coast District Council for their involvement and feedback in this work. Their input has been appreciated.”
