Major rehabilitation works are about to get underway for State Highway 2, Chapel St, in Masterton.
Roxanne Hilliard, Wellington Transport Alliance Manager, says contractors will work on Chapel Street between Jackson Street and Lincoln Road roundabout, followed by Chapel Street between Michael and Russel Streets.
“These sections of road are at a stage where full rehabilitation and reconstruction are needed. This means contractors will have to fully excavate the sections being repaired and build an entirely new base.”
“Contractors will excavate to a depth of about 400 mm and lay a new structural asphalt base.”
“The structural asphalt will be built up in three layers, with the final asphalt road surface over the top. It’ll make the road much stronger and less prone to potholes and traffic damage,” Ms Hilliard says
The work will be underway from Sunday, 21 April, through to Wednesday, 5 June, weather permitting.
Timeframes may be pushed out if bad weather occurs.
Ms Hilliard says most of the work will be done at night between 9 pm and 4 am.
“Night works mean fewer disruptions for drivers and businesses. While the rehabilitation works will impact them, we are doing our absolute best to minimise this.”
“The end result will be a much-improved stretch of road requiring less repair and maintenance. This is a win for drivers, residents, and local businesses,” Ms Hilliard says
One side of Chapel Street will be closed day and night throughout the work schedule, meaning vehicles must detour down Dixon Street. We encourage road users to follow signposted detours.
NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance want to thank the public for their patience and cooperation while this work is done. Drivers are asked to follow all traffic management and temporary speed limits in place. They are there to keep everyone safe.
