People travelling between Baypark and Bayfair will see comprehensive overnight road closures and detours next week with the project undertaking remedial works ahead of final surfacing at both the Bayfair and Baypark ends of the project.

From Sunday 25 February to Friday 1 March overnight road closures will apply around Bayfair roundabout, on Maunganui Road (including between Concord Avenue and SH2/SH29A Te Maunga interchange) and across SH2/SH29A Te Maunga interchange.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi would like to thank road users for their ongoing patience as we work towards completing final surfacing at Bay Link.

This work includes the following closures:

  • On Monday 26 February and Thursday 29 February (from approximately 8.30pm to 5am each night) Maunganui Road southbound is scheduled to be closed between Bayfair roundabout and Exeter Street. A detour via Girven Road, Maranui Street and SH2 Sandhurst interchange will apply.
  • On Monday 26 February (from approximately 10pm to 5am) Maunganui Road southbound at ground level is currently scheduled to be closed between Concord Avenue and Bayfair roundabout.  A detour via Concord Ave, Oceanbeach Road, Maranui Street and SH2 Sandhurst interchange applies. For Bayfair traffic, detour via Concord Ave and Farm Street.
  • On Tuesday 27 February and Wednesday 28 February (from approximately 9pm to 5am), road closures will apply on Matapihi Road that will change access to and from Owens Place and Matapihi. During these hours, access in and out of Matapihi Road and Owens Place for light vehicles will only be available via a signposted detour temporarily connecting Maunganui Road with the end of Titoki Place. This temporary access point on Titoki Place will provide for a left in from SH2/SH29A Te Maunga interchange, and a right out, also towards SH2/SH29A Te Maunga interchange. Traffic controllers will be stationed across the Bay Link project site controlling traffic with stop/go signals while this temporary arrangement is in place.
    • Businesses on Owens Place and Matapihi Road will remain accessible during their normal trading hours.
    • For SH29A traffic travelling towards Mount Maunganui, a detour via Truman Lane, SH2 Sandhurst interchange and the Bayfair flyover applies. For SH2 traffic travelling towards Bayfair, a detour via SH2 Bayfair flyover, Golf Road roundabout and Maunganui Road southbound applies.

Closures will vary night to night depending on site requirements and progress, and people are asked to allow extra time, follow signposted detours and drive with caution through the project site.

Works are undertaken at night where possible with the aim to minimise disruption to people travelling through the area. For more information on detour routes, visit nzta.govt.nz/baylink-traffic.

New lane configuration changes to Girven Road

To support better traffic flows through the area, the lane configuration on Girven Road westbound approaching Bayfair roundabout is being modified as follows:

  • The right lane will provide for a right turn onto Maunganui Road around Bayfair roundabout only.
  • The middle lane will provide for a straight through to Matapihi Road and a right turn onto Maunganui Road around Bayfair roundabout only.
  • A left turning slip lane will provide for a left turn onto Maunganui Road southbound only.

These changes are currently expected to take effect from early morning on Tuesday 27 February.

These works are weather dependent. If they are delayed because of weather or other unforeseen issues, they will be carried out on the next suitable night/s.

If you are travelling while this work is underway, please follow detours and drive with caution through the area. NZTA thanks drivers, local residents and businesses for their patience.
