Auckland Council has announced the appointment of Richard Leggat as chair of the Auckland Transport board from 1 February 2024.
Mayor Wayne Brown led the selection panel and welcomes Richard Leggat to the leadership of the Auckland Transport board.
“Richard was the panel’s preferred candidate from a very strong field. The panel appreciated his strategic and straight-forward approach, and he will bring a fresh perspective to lead Auckland Transport.
“He is well placed to drive the initiatives and innovations needed to improve transport outcomes in Auckland. It is no simple task, and I look forward to working with him to fix Auckland.”
The appointment was approved by the Performance and Appointments Committee on 12 December 2023. The committee is responsible for appointments to the boards of council-controlled organisations, in accordance with the council’s Appointment and Remuneration Policy for Board Members and the Local Government Act.
“Richard will become chair of Auckland Transport from 1 February 2024.
“The Performance and Appointment committee gives its thanks to Mark Darrow for being the acting chair of Auckland Transport while the chair recruitment was completed.
“Mark will remain a member of the board and chair of the Finance and Assurance Committee and will become deputy chair of the board early in 2024.”
About Richard Leggat
Richard has been a full time professional director for over 10 years with a range of public sector and private sector roles along with directorships on sports, conservation and iwi boards.
Prior to these governance roles Richard worked in the finance sector for 15 years and prior to that in apparel manufacturing.
He was on the board of Waterfront Auckland and then Eke Panuku and currently chairs Westhaven Marina Ltd, so is familiar with Auckland council process.
He is a keen outdoors person and sportsman having played cricket at provincial level and is a regular cyclist and skier.
