State Highway 2 just south of Wairoa will remain closed overnight following a large slip in the early hours of this morning.
Heavy rainfall over the weekend led to the slip, which initially blocked both lanes of the road near the intersection with The Crescent.
Contractors onsite have been working all day to clear the slip but a geotechnical assessment carried out today has advised more work needs to be done before the stretch of road can safely open.
Waka Kotahi Hawke’s Bay / Tairāwhiti System Manager Martin Colditz says the closure is crucial to ensure the safety of road users in the area.
“Please delay your travel. It’s important to emphasise that we are doing as much as we can, as quickly as possible, to get this connection restored.”
Waka Kotahi will provide an update as early as possible tomorrow morning on the timeframe for reopening.
