Gisborne District Council has finished clearing William Pettie bridge and now crews move to the Gladstone Road bridge from 2pm today clearing woody debris under the bridge.
Waka Kotahi National Journey Manager Helen Harris says there are no concerns about the structural integrity of the bridge, however Waka Kotahi has worked with council, to clear the wood debris from both bridges as quickly as possible.
“The debris has accumulated over the past 24 hours as a result of the heavy rainfall. There was concern the downstream effects of the water could affect houses on the riverbank.
“While the work is carried out, the bridge will be closed – between Reads Quay and the Esplanade. However there will be detours in place to guide motorists around the city. There is no alternative route for HPMV vehicles.
“Please delay your travel if you can, while we wait for contractors to finish the clearance.”
