The Cameron Road/Fifteenth Avenue intersection will be closed to traffic at nights from 6pm Sunday 26 November to 6am Thursday, 30 November for work to resurface the intersection. The closure is expected to be in place for four nights (weather dependent).
This work is part of the Building our future – Cameron Road, Te Papa project, which is on track to be completed by the end of December 2023.
Since construction began in September 2021, the intersection has undergone major underground work on wastewater and stormwater infrastructure, as well as above ground safety improvements. Laying down the new road surface is a milestone activity because it is one of the final phases in completing these works.
From 6pm Sunday, 26 November to 6am Monday, 27 November the intersection will be fully closed to traffic.
This will mean:
- Cameron Road will be closed from Thirteenth Avenue to Sixteenth Avenue in both directions.
- Southbound traffic (heading away from the city) on Cameron Road will be diverted via Thirteenth Avenue (east) and Fraser Street.
- Northbound traffic (heading towards the city) on Cameron Road will be diverted via 17th Avenue (east) to Fraser Street.
- Westbound traffic (heading towards SH2) will need to use an alternative route.
- The State Highway 2 off ramp to Cameron Road will be fully closed during this night, with an alternative route required.
There are no formal detours in place for access on and off State Highway 2. Electronic sign boards will advise the Fifteenth Avenue intersection is closed and an alternative route should be taken.
For people headed to the eastern suburbs of Tauranga, alternative routes could include:
- From Bethlehem roundabout take Moffatt Road to join SH29A to Poike Road (Ohauiti) and Welcome Bay/Maungatapu roundabout.
- Exit SH2 on Waihi Road to join Cameron Road at Eleventh Avenue. Turn right and take the Thirteenth Avenue (east) and Fraser Street detour as above. The Eleventh Ave east intersection, heading towards Memorial Park, is currently fully closed as work continues on a stormwater crossing.
- There are also night closures of the western side of the Elizabeth Street intersection for resurfacing from Sunday, 26 November to Tuesday, 28 November so this alternate route off SH2 from Takitimu Drive is not recommended on these nights. This work is weather dependent and could continue into the following nights.
- Continue along SH2 over the harbour bridge to Hewletts Road, Maunganui Road and join SH29A to Maungatapu/Welcome Bay/Ohauiti.
For people headed westbound out of the city towards SH2, alternative routes could include:
- Follow SH29A from Welcome Bay/Maungatapu roundabout, past Tauranga Crossing and turn right into Moffatt Road to join SH2 at the Bethlehem roundabout.
- Take Fraser Street and Oropi Road to the Oropi roundabout and join SH29A, past Tauranga Crossing and turn right into Moffatt Road to join SH2 at the Bethlehem roundabout.
- Take Fraser Street and Thirteenth Avenue (east) to join Cameron Road. Turn left onto Eleventh Avenue to join Waihi Road and SH2.
Please note these are examples of alternative routes only.
From 6pm Monday, 27 November to 6am Tuesday, 28 November the southbound lanes of Cameron Road (heading away from the city) will be closed for resurfacing. This will mean:
- Southbound traffic will be diverted along Thirteenth Avenue, Fraser Street and 17th Avenue.
- Traffic will not be able to cross Cameron Road, as the centre of the intersection between the northbound and southbound lanes of Cameron Road will be fully closed.
- Traffic heading from Fifteenth Avenue to SH2 will be diverted along Fraser Street and 17th Avenue, to the northbound lane of Cameron Road to SH2.
- Traffic heading from SH2 to Fifteenth Avenue will be diverted left onto Cameron Road to Thirteenth Avenue, Devonport Road, on to Fifteenth Avenue.
- These diversions will also be in place for eastbound (heading to Fifteenth Avenue) and westbound (heading to SH2) traffic.
From 6pm Tuesday, 28 November to 6am Wednesday, 29 November the northbound lanes of Cameron Road (heading towards the city) will be closed for resurfacing. This will mean:
- Northbound traffic will be diverted along 17th Avenue, Fraser Street and Thirteenth Avenue.
- Westbound traffic (heading towards SH2) will need to use an alternative route (as above).
- The State Highway 2 off ramp to Cameron Road will be fully closed during this night, with an alternative route required.
From 6pm Wednesday, 29 November to 6am Thursday, 30 November there will be alternating lane closures on both the northbound and southbound lanes of Cameron Road for line marking. Access to and from SH2 will be maintained.
Local residents, emergency services, and businesses will still have vehicle access during these night works. Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained at all times. We ask road users to be prepared for delays during construction in this area. Please allow extra time and plan your journey accordingly.
This night work is weather dependent and if not completed between Sunday, 26 November and Thursday, 29 November will continue on the following nights. The intersection will be reopened for use during the day.
