Work has temporarily been halted at the asphalt paving site on Timaru’s SH1 near Waimataitai Street after very poor ground conditions were encountered earlier this week, says Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
“Options for pavement strengthening are being explored to overcome these issues and work has been paused. We are aiming to re-start this Sunday, 15 October from 8 pm,” says John Keenan, Maintenance Contract Manager for Waka Kotahi in South Canterbury.
Crews had been milling the existing road surface in preparation for fresh asphalt at night, outside the peak traffic hours.
Reworking of this area will be required to remediate and additional works and preparation are planned. The work is expected to continue for up to another seven nights with further investigation and testing either side of Labour weekend, under Stop/Go, 8pm to 6am.
