State Highway 2 Napier-Hastings Expressway, between Pakowhai and Evenden Roads, will close between 8pm tonight and 4am tomorrow to allow contractors to replace median barrier posts damaged in a crash.

A crash has caused extensive damage to a significant number of flexible median barrier posts on the centre line.

Waka Kotahi Hawke’s Bay / Tairāwhiti Journey Manager Andre Taylor says tonight’s closure will ensure new barrier posts can be installed and the safety rope tightened.

“We acknowledge the closure is short notice but there will be a signposted detour available through Pakowhai and Evenden Roads.”

“The extent of the damage to the median barrier shows it helped prevent a potentially serious crash into oncoming traffic.

“It’s essential we get these damaged posts replaced as quickly as possible. Tonight’s closure will enable our contractors to do this safely.

“We realise closing part of the expressway overnight will be inconvenient and we appreciate people taking the detour. The detour is open to HPMV vehicles.
