Drivers in the top of the South Island need to take extra care on state highways today as strong winds buffet the region.

Update 10:05 am

Contractors are onsite and working to clear the road.

Road users should check highway conditions before they travel. The latest details are available on the Waka Kotahi website.

Highway conditions – Nelson and Marlborough(external link)

9.50am

The Metservice has a strong wind watch in place for Marlborough, Nelson/Tasman, Buller, and Westland north of Hokitika. It is in effect until the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The winds are already having an impact, with treefalls reported on State Highway 6 on the Whangamoa Hill and at Pelorus.

The highway is open, and contractors are clearing debris from affected areas. However, while the strong winds persist, the risk of further treefalls remains.

Drivers travelling in affected regions must be prepared for the bad weather and potential travel delays. Motorcyclists and drivers of high-sided vehicles (eg trucks and caravans) must take extra care.
