The largest women’s sporting event in the world is now less than a month away from hitting New Zealand shores.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is a massive event, attracting a global audience of over one billion people. Running from 20 July to 20 August, it’s an incredible opportunity that will put New Zealand and our co-hosts Australia front and centre on the world stage, showcase our unique culture and landscape, benefit local communities and leave a lasting legacy for women’s sport in this country.

It’s also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many Kiwis to experience a high-profile FIFA World Cup event, come together to support our national team on home soil, and watch some of the world’s best football players in action.

This year’s tournament will be the biggest yet, with 32 teams competing for the coveted prize across Australasia, including a number of games in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Dunedin. It would be great for everyone in Aotearoa to get involved, whether that be Kiwis proudly supporting our team the Football Ferns, or our expat communities supporting their national teams.

People can be part of the action by purchasing tickets or by getting amongst the off-field action at the free FIFA Fan Festivals, which will be running throughout the tournament. Tickets are available for as little as $20 for adults and $10 for children. Bookings are also available for larger groups including schools, sports clubs and community groups via the FIFA Community Group Sales option so there’s every reason to get behind the tournament.

The tournament is expected to attract tens of thousands of fans from around the world. That’s exciting news for New Zealand, as it presents another opportunity to enhance our reputation as a great place to visit, work, do business and host world-class events. Communities across the country will also benefit from upgraded sporting facilities.

We’ve seen massive momentum build behind women’s sport around the world in recent years. Last year’s Women’s Euros final between England and Germany drew a record-breaking crowd of 87,192 spectators, an increase of 18,321 from the opening match of the tournament.

Now it’s our turn, with an opportunity for New Zealand to show our support for women’s sport on a global scale, as we did for the Rugby Women’s World Cup last year. Co-hosting this tournament will see us continue to pave the way for current and future women athletes – raising the value and visibility of women’s sport, inspiring our young people to play and creating new sporting leaders.

There’s a lot for New Zealanders to be excited about. You can find out everything about the FIFA Women’s World Cup, including the tournament schedule, and events here
