If you’re looking for a new way to boost your wellbeing, participating in a community tree planting day is a great option.

Auckland Council runs many of these events in various green spaces and regional parks during late autumn and winter, which are the best times for trees to get their roots established. It’s a great way to get out and meet people, learn new skills from experts, experience the beauty of nature and look after our environment – plus it’s fun!

Here’s the dirt on why tree-planting days are so good for you:

Connect with nature

For starters, there’s the reward of knowing you’re doing your bit to look after the environment. By helping restore our ngāhere (forest), you’re providing habitat for native birds and insects, and improving water quality in our streams and wetlands, which in turn supports aquatic life.

You’re giving back to the ecosystem that you’re part of too, and that’s good for everyone! You’re also helping increase the tree canopy, which will make our region more resilient to climate change.

Grow skills and knowledge

You might think you need gardening skills to take part in a tree planting day, but it’s actually pretty simple and there are experts on site to help you. You’ll go home with new knowledge of planting techniques and perhaps get some ideas for native plants that you can grow around your own home.

Bring your own spade, or use one provided. All you need is comfortable clothing that will protect you from sun and rain, a hat, snacks, and a water bottle.

Leaf your best life

An 18-year-long UK study with 70,000 participants found that volunteers experience better health and higher life satisfaction.

Anyone can attend a tree planting day – take along the whole whānau. It’s a great way to introduce children and teens to the feel-good vibes that are gained from giving back to the community, and it’s also a great way to see the results of your efforts as the young plants grow over the years.

Put down roots

Tree planting days are a great way to meet people from your own community and make new connections. They’re also fun team-building exercises. Why not sign up for one with your workmates or sports team. You might also like to join up to a group or organisation who do volunteer conservation work across Auckland.

Check out Tiaki Tāmaki Makaurau / Conservation Auckland for a comprehensive list of conservation groups across the region.

How to get involved
