As well as lifting the state of local emergency declaration, Auckland has moved into a local transition period, signaling the move from emergency response to recovery.
“Mayor Wayne Brown this morning brought the state of local emergency to an end,” says Duty Controller Parul Sood. “In doing this he also gave notice of a local transition period, which allows 28 days to complete building assessments and help Auckland recover from this weather event.”
While Auckland is still seeing the tail end of a band of thunderstorms, weather will continue to clear this afternoon and into the evening.
State of local emergency ends
Mayor Wayne Brown this morning ended the state of local emergency declared for Auckland on Tuesday. This means the powers available to the council, AEM and emergency responders under the declaration are no longer required and we can focus our attention on transitioning to recovery and business as usual.
Rapid building assessments update
Following this week’s weather event, Auckland Council’s building consents team has now completed 234 rapid building assessments. Of these, seven yellow placards and 33 white placards have been issued (the remainder had no visible event impacts).
“The assessments are performed to help owners and occupants understand any limitations on the safe use of their building to support recovery. They also help us to understand the scope and scale of any damage so we can better support the community,” says Auckland Council’s General Manager of Building Consents Ian McCormick.
“Our teams are working as quickly as possible to complete these assessments and from what we are seeing so far, the weather event this week hasn’t caused any widespread or significant damage across our region.”
In response to weather events, Auckland Council carries out rapid building assessments to help determine safety and risk for properties across Tāmaki Makaurau.
The rapid assessments are an initial safety check – taking up to 20 minutes – they can generally be completed by inspectors from outside the building, without needing to enter.

Storm debris and green waste
Public land: report storm debris or fallen trees and vegetation on public land to the Auckland Council website or the ‘Report a problem’ tool.
Streams and waterways: for significant blockages or debris (including vehicles) in streams and waterways, please phone Auckland Council on 09 301 0101.
Waste disposal
If you have insurance, please contact your insurance company in the first instance to confirm the process for disposing of flood-related waste. Please take photos of the damage before you dispose of anything.
