SH3 between Manganui Road and Awakau Road, near Awakino has been closed following a slip.

Heavy rainfall in the area over the past 24 hours has caused the slip.

Road users are advised to use SH4 as a detour between Te Mapara and Taumarunui.

Roading crews are currently on site assessing the slip and the road is expected to be open on Friday.

The road is closed between Manganui Road and Awakau Road and Awakino is still accessible from the Taranaki side of SH3.

Waka Kotahi Manawatū-Whanganui/Taranaki System Manager Rob Service says there’s been a significant amount of rainfall in the area and road users travelling on all parts of the network should continue to take care and drive to the conditions.

“With potential for further surface flooding and slips especially north of Mt Taranaki, we’re asking people to keep an eye on the forecast before travelling and be safe out there.

“That might mean delaying your travel, or if you do need to use the roads, driving to conditions and being mindful of other road users. Even if the roads haven’t been flooded, they might be wet and if that’s the case they will be slippery,” says Mr Service.

“We are keeping a close watch on the situation and there’s always the potential for short notice closures. Please take care around our emergency works sites, where traffic management is already in place.”

Drivers are urged to check road and weather conditions online before they travel. If it’s not safe, please delay your journey.
