Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises that SH2 through Waimana Gorge will not open tonight, despite best efforts from contractors to clear the road.

A further slip came down today in the gorge, resulting in more mud and debris on the road surface, slowing progress clearing the three existing slips.

The closure is between SH2/Station Road (Taneatua township) and SH2/Wainui Road.

Wainui Road is still open for detour.

With the wet weather, the ground is completely saturated and there’s a risk of further slips.

Reminder to please drive to the conditions if you must go out. Watch your following distances and expect the unexpected as the impact of the wet weather could cause further risks on the roading network.

Next update tomorrow afternoon, unless the situation changes earlier.
