Waihenga Bridge, State Highway 53 Martinborough, closed due to flooding

Drivers heading to and from Martinborough in Wairarapa are warned the Waihenga Bridge is currently closed because of flooding.

Update – 23 April 6.55am:

Water levels have receded, and Waihenga Bridge reopened early this morning. State Highway 53 is now fully open to all traffic.


Drivers heading to and from Martinborough in Wairarapa are warned the Waihenga Bridge is currently closed because of flooding.

The bridge was closed around 8.15 pm. There is currently no estimated time for it to reopen.

Road users should use alternative routes. Detours on local roads will take add 40 to 50 minutes to travel times. Drivers should consider delaying their journey.

The highway’s status will be updated on the Waka Kotahi website.
