Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII will visit cyclone-impacted communities in the Ngaati Kahungunu rohe from Sunday 2nd to Wednesday 5th of April.

Kiingitanga Chief of Staff, Archdeacon Ngira Simmonds says many whaanau and hapuu in Ngaati Kahungunu have been hit particularly hard and need on-going support.

“Kiingi Tuheitia is going to see for himself and hear from the people first-hand the devastation caused by Cyclone Gabrielle throughout the rohe. He has a deep concern for those who have been significantly impacted by the cyclone and wishes to share his aroha at this time with all whaanau.

“The Whare Ariki are honoured to be invited to sit together with mana whenua and listen to their stories and hear solutions put forward for recovery.

“We will be seeking to support Marae and hear their concerns and suggestions for partnership with the Crown in developing kaupapa Maaori recovery responses. Kiingi Tuheitia upholds the Mana Motuhake of every hapuu and iwi and is calling on all agencies offering support to ensure they work with mana whenua and engage fully with Maaori.”

At the same time staff from Waikato-Tainui and Ngaati Tamaoho will be travelling to Wairoa where they are setting up camp for one week to offer practical support on the ground to Marae and communities. Other Tainui iwi; Raukawa, Ngaati Haua and Ngaati Maniapoto, will also be on hand conducting site checks and visits in anticipation of further return visits to extend support.

The Royal delegation will be welcomed at Omahu Marae on 3rd April at 10am, then visit Wairoa and Tangoio Marae on 4th April and return home on 5th April.

Media are invited to join the delegation at Omahu Marae and hear from impacted whaanau.
