Tāmaki Makaurau has been significantly impacted by both the intense storm that hit the region over Auckland Anniversary weekend and then Cyclone Gabrielle.

With the worst of the weather over, Auckland Council facilities are beginning to return to normal operating hours, but some facilities will still provide post-storm support required for some Aucklanders.

Libraries and Community Venues

At midday today, Thursday 16 February, 49 libraries reopened, along with 10 other council venues and facilities.

These are spread out across the region, from Pukekohe in the South to Helensville in the north, and Waiheke Island.

Most libraries will have a full selection of normal services on offer. These includes returning books, taking new books out, computer bookings, photocopying, research and more.

Most importantly, for any Aucklander who has been impacted by the severe weather and needs it, libraries are a great place to charge mobile phones and to use the free wi-fi to connect with loved ones and check on emails, as well as access the internet.

To find out the library open nearest to you, please head to Auckland Council Libraries website.

For community venues that are open, please head to the art centres, galleries, and theatres page of the Auckland Council website.

Service Centres

All service centres across the region are open with normal services resuming.

Pools and Leisure Centres

Most Auckland Council Pools and Leisure Centres reopened today and more will open in the coming days. Please be aware that while centres are reopening, some services, such as learn to swim, may not be available until next week.

West Wave’s fitness centre and recreation programmes have also reopened; however the pools were severely impacted by the flooding from the January storm and will remain closed until further notice.

Auckland Council-operated pool and leisure centres welcome anyone from the community who needs a shower to visit and use the facilities – entry is free of charge for anyone who needs to use this service.

In West Auckland, this will be provided at the public changing facilities at Ranui Domain. The facilities will be opened from 7am – 9pm daily from today, Thursday 16 February, for anyone in the community needing a shower.

Aucklanders are advised to check the pools and leisure website before heading to their local centre to make sure the service they want is available.

Parks Accommodation

Park accommodation across the region has been affected as well.

All accommodation in the western and northern regional parks are closed due to a variety of reasons, including flooding, damage to facilities, water supply and access issues. This includes campgrounds, baches and lodges. Customers will receive an email where affected.

Included in this closure are the accommodation offerings of Mahana tiny home, Pukoro Bach and the CSC (Certified Self-Contained) parking, which are located next to Parakai Hot Springs just down the road from Helensville.

In the southern parks, most accommodation options remain open. Three campgrounds and two self-contained campervan parking areas in the Hunua Regional Park have closed, while Ambury Campground in Māngere and Cliff Top Campground at Ōmana Regional Park have reduced capacity.

If you have an accommodation booking with us, please consider all emergency management warnings. If in doubt, postpone or cancel your bookings online by 11.59am on the day prior to your arrival. We have temporarily suspended the 5-day prior refund and amendment rules which means you can now have a full booking refund or reschedule to another date (excluding bank transaction fees) until 11.59 pm of the day prior to your arrival.

You can manage any booking refunds or amendments by logging on to your MyAuckland account.

The Auckland Council holiday parks at Ōrewa Beach, Martins Bay and Whangateau are not affected by these closures and remain open, as does the Waiheke Island Backpackers Hostel.
