A scholarship has been established at the University of Waikato to remember alumnus and highly respected University staffer Huy Vu.

The Huy Tien Vu Scholarship, funded by the University, will provide support to an extraordinary student studying in year three or above towards an undergraduate degree programme offered by the Waikato Management School. The scholarship is worth $5,000 and will be awarded annually, with preference given to students from Vietnam and/or students who are refugees

Huy, who died suddenly in January 2022, was an integral part of the University, with 2022 marking his 20th year of service. He was well known by many in his various roles, particularly through his support of international students, and more recently, students in the Waikato Management School.

Huy believed in the value of education, in the importance of creating an inclusive and safe environment for both staff and students and creating opportunities for people to grow. He was renowned for his authenticity, his compassion, his willingness to go the extra mile, his wonderful sense of fun and his ability to make a competition out of almost anything.

Among his many contributions, he pioneered the University’s international student orientation, a water safety programme for international students, and advocated for and supported many students and their families during difficult circumstances over the years.

He will also be well-known to many as the MC of the University’s graduation ceremonies, where he dedicated himself to perfecting the pronunciation of names from all cultures, often taking the time to contact students personally to learn to pronounce their name correctly.

To honour his memory, friends, family and colleagues can donate to the Huy Tien Vu fund here. The University Foundation will acknowledge all donations with relevant tax receipts and information.
