Residents and users of State Highway 1 just south of Ohingaiti are advised of upcoming daytime works to carry out underslip repairs. The underslip saw a large amount of earth on the roadside slip away.

Work will begin on the repairs near the Rangatira Golf Course on Monday 16 January and is expected to take four weeks to complete.

Contractors will be on site between 6am and 6pm daily, Monday to Friday and some Saturdays. During these times, the southbound lane will be closed and Stop/Go traffic management with a 30km/h speed restriction will be in place and road users are advised to plan for delays of up to 10 minutes.

Waka Kotahi Manawatu-Whanganui System Manager Rob Service says contractors will repair the underslip by constructing shotcrete (used in structural repairs) retaining walls.

“There is significant scour at this site where water has been running straight off the bank after a culvert failed. Work from Monday will focus on repairing the culvert and constructing a retaining wall to stabilise the site.”

“We have had traffic management in place here to move traffic away from the underslip, using the southbound passing lane instead. When we’ve completed the retaining walls we will be able to open all lanes back up, reinstating the passing lane.”

“We’re advising people to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra time for travel. We know delays can be frustrating at times, and we want to thank people for their patience and understanding.”

These works are weather dependent and may be postponed at short notice.
