Your rights as a registered victim of a person detained in hospital for mental health treatment

The Victims’ Rights Act 2002 allows registered victims of people detained in a hospital for mental health assessment or treatment to receive certain notifications about the detained person.

This document contains information for registered victims and their representatives about:

  • the information (notifications) registered victims are entitled to receive about the person having mental health treatment
  • the treatment and leave processes for people who begin mental health treatment through the justice system
  • who registered victims can contact if they have questions, want more information, to change their contact details for notifications, to give feedback or make a complaint.
