A large part of Te Ara Awataha – Northcote’s new greenway – has been completed this month thanks to an ongoing collaboration between Kaipātiki Local Board, Eke Panuku, Mana Whenua, Healthy Waters, Kāinga Ora and local stakeholders.

“It’s exciting to see the many years of hard mahi come to fruition on the Te Ara Awataha greenway project allowing those who live in or visit Northcote to discover new spaces to cycle, walk, enjoy and play,” says Kaipātiki Local Board Deputy Chair and Northcote Unlock lead Danielle Grant.

A key part of a larger Northcote development, the Te Ara Awataha greenway follows the path of the original Awataha Stream. Buried in underground pipes for years, sections of the stream have been opened and replanted in a process called daylighting that rejuvenates buried urban streams. Increased control of the stream’s flow will also help address ongoing flooding issues.

A part of the greenway runs alongside Northcote Intermediate School and Onepoto Primary School and includes an outdoor classroom with a learning deck and terraced seating.

A public celebration for the new greenway is planned for early 2023 so follow Kaipātiki Local Board or Eke Panuku on Facebook for updates.
