New Zealand observers are to join a Multinational Observer Group that will report on Fiji’s forthcoming General Election.

“Aotearoa New Zealand is proud to support Fiji’s upcoming election on 14 December,” Nanaia Mahuta said.

“The Multinational Observer Group is an important initiative to support the people of Fiji and the international community to have confidence in the election outcome. Our participation is in response to an invitation from the Fijian Government.

“New Zealand encourages all participants to commit to transparency and a credible process before, during, and after the election. We hope the elections are run in a way where all Fijian voters feel they can participate, have access to the process, and that the system is open.

“The observer delegation includes current MPs Hon Todd McClay, Anahila Kanongata’a-Suisuiki and Greg O’Connor, as well as former MP Dr Ashraf Choudhary and former UNICEF Resident Representative to Fiji, Gillian Mellsop.

“The involvement of the delegation reflects the strength of our relationship with Fiji, and our ongoing commitment to support Fiji’s democratic processes. The Multinational Observer Group is co-ordinated by Australia, India and Indonesia.

“Across the region, we support Pacific peoples to participate in open, fair elections. We’re committed to supporting human rights and good governance across the Pacific,” said Nanaia Mahuta.

Aotearoa New Zealand has provided electoral support to Fiji since 2012, including observers for general elections in 2014 and 2018. Representatives from the NZ Electoral Commission are also on the ground providing technical assistance to support the Fijian Elections Office.
