The 1.2km walkway runs from the Leigh Wharf, around Omaha Cove to just past the Leigh Scenic Reserve. The section with the landslide is managed by the Department of Conservation.

A landslide, reported on 8 November, left the walkway covered in soil and fallen trees, and the track itself is also damaged.

DOC is now undertaking work to assess and quantify the substantial damage, before deciding how to proceed.

“Given the extent of the slip and its location, a substantial amount of remedial work is likely to be required, which will require significant investment,” says Rebecca Rush, Operations Manager, Tāmaki Makaurau District.

“Sadly, this walkway will not be open again this summer. We know it is disappointing news for the local community, but we feel an ongoing closure is the sensible option to ensure visitors are not put at risk. We do not want people trying to cross the landslip.”

The nearby Goat Island walkway remains open and is a suitable alternative with a similar length of 1.5km one way. No dogs are allowed on this walkway.

DOC is also undertaking work to fix the public toilets and showers at Goat Island, which are temporarily closed due to a water supply issue. Portaloos have been installed as a short-term alternative.

“We’re asking the public to bear with us, and be respectful of our rangers who are working hard to ensure we have safe tracks and sanitary facilities for everyone to use,” says Rebecca Rush.
