Important resurfacing works to keep State Highway 1 safe for road users will kick off next week at two sites in the Rangitikei region, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising.

On Monday 28 November, works will begin to undertake surface repairs on a section of SH1 in Taihape township. Work at this site is expected to take 10 days to complete, with Stop/Go traffic management in place between Ruru Road and Toroa Street between 7am and 6pm on weekdays until Friday 9 December.

On Thursday 1 December, a full rebuild of a section of SH1 at Marton will get underway. This work will be carried out between 6am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday, through until Wednesday 21 December. There will be Stop/Go traffic management in place between Kakariki Road and south of Ashby Lane.

Waka Kotahi is urging people to plan ahead for any travel on this route and expect delays of up to 10 minutes at each of these sites in Taihape and Marton, while this work is underway.

Road users are also advised that Waka Kotahi is planning a two-day roadworks closure of SH1 Desert Road on 6 and 7 December, 7am to 5pm. There will be a signposted detour in place; light vehicles will detour between Rangipo and Waiouru via SH46, 47, 4 and 49 around the western side of Mt Ruapehu via National Park. SH46 is not suitable for HPMVs who will need to take SH41, 47, 4 and 49. This closure is weather dependent.

Waka Kotahi thanks everyone for their patience and understanding while this important work is completed.
