Passing on knowledge and wisdom to the next generation is a core element of medicine, going all the way back to Hippocrates.
That was the message to attendees as some of the best and the brightest were recognised at the annual Clinical Teaching Awards held at Waikato Hospital on Tuesday.
Compere and retired cardiologist Dr Clyde Wade said with Waikato being one of New Zealand’s major tertiary hospitals, teaching and research play important roles in the quality of services provided.
“Today’s event is our eighth annual teaching award ceremony and highlights how clinical teaching underpins the quality of care we give our patients.”
The Clyde Wade Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching
“Each year registered medical officers (RMOs) are asked to nominate up to three clinical teachers for this award and to rank them, giving reasons for their nomination. An adjudication panel then reviews the nomination and determines a winner.
This award recognises excellence in clinical teaching.
“This year’s award went to Renal Specialist Dr Eddie Tan. A humble man, Eddie has been a consistent performer having featured in our top 10 for five out of the eight years this award has been running,” said Dr Wade.
Students commented that Dr Tan’s commitment to current basic physician trainees is amazing and that the quality of his teaching both in the context of renal medicine and training is exceptional. He has put in special effort to create unique teaching opportunities including simulation of clinical examinations and special procedural skills teaching which were described as excellent. These occasions have been outside of normal working hours and have been greatly appreciated.
Te Tohu Hiranga – Waikato Excellence in Clinical Equity Teaching Award
‘Nau te rourou Nāku te rourou, Ka ora ait e iwi.’
Introduced in 2021, the Te Tohu Hiranga – Waikato Excellence in Clinical Equity Teaching Award shines a spotlight on the clinical equity champions training our RMOs at Waikato Hospital.
Deputy Director of Physician Education, Dr Myra Ruka, said this prestigious award is nominated by RMOs for Waikato staff who exemplify excellence in clinical equity teaching.
“We had a large number of high quality nominations this year and I am pleased to announce that the 2022 Te Tohu Hiranga Award has been awarded to Dr Te Aro Moxon.”
Among the nominations, Dr Moxon’s really stood out with his ongoing championing of the importance of whakawhanaungatanga (establishing relationships), his willingness to go the extra mile in assisting staff’s understanding of equity and leading Te Reo teaching at departmental learning sessions particular highlights.
Dr Moxon was described as having the ability to light the faces of young patients and their whānau when he provides a full patient consultation in Te Reo and is considered by his peers to be a beacon for other Māori clinicians on their cultural journey.
