The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has modified the hazard classifications for two fungicides contained in a number of products.
Tebuconazole and propiconazole are active ingredients for professional use in timber treatment and as pesticides across a range of cereals, food crops and ornamental plants.
The changes to hazard classifications for both chemicals include the addition of a classification for reproductive toxicity and the removal of another relating to harmful effects on specific organs. The decision will affect 125 substances containing the active ingredients.
The new classifications will mean additional rules for using some products containing these substances, helping to further protect people and the environment.
The EPA carried out a modified reassessment of the chemicals in the wake of significant new information showing adverse health effects on human reproductive systems.
“Our reassessment of these chemicals factored in the best available science and the impact of these adjustments to the hazard classifications on people’s health, industries, and the environment,” says Dr Shaun Presow, Hazardous Substances Reassessments Manager.
“Updating the classifications more accurately represents the hazards of these substances.”
Manufacturers and importers have until 29 August 2024 to make the required changes to labelling, packaging, and safety information.
