Regular users of State Highway 2, Remutaka Hill, need to plan ahead for a pending road closure this coming weekend.
The route will be closed to allow contractors to do essential maintenance. It will be carried out over two nights – Sunday, 9 October and Monday, 10 October, and the road will be closed from 9pm to 4am.
These overnight closures will allow road resurfacing, mowing, slip, and drain clearing to be carried out.
The addition of the Monday night closure to the previously publicised schedule is needed because of the damage caused to the highway by recent severe weather. State Highway 2, Remutaka Hill, is a crucial transport link, and this work is essential for keeping the road up to standard and safe for road users.
These closures significantly reduce the number of daytime disruptions for road users. Road crews can also complete a large amount of work safely over a small number of closures because multiple crews can work across the hill at the same time without disrupting traffic.
Crossing information:
- We cannot offer crossings of the Remutaka Hill during the maintenance closures unless a traveller has special circumstances and has booked one of three time slots available:
- Hutt to Featherston 10.30 pm
- Featherston to Hutt 11.30 pm
- Hutt to Featherston 12.30 am
- The amount of work taking place makes unplanned crossings unsafe to manage – for both road crews and road users. Any travellers with special circumstances should contact customer@wta.nzta.govt.nz
Otherwise, we regret that travellers turning up without a booking will be turned away. - Road access will be available for emergency services.
