Waka Kotahi contractors worked through the night to complete temporary repairs to a section of the Northwestern Cycleway underpass at Te Atatū which was damaged during digging work on the Northwestern Busway Improvements project early on Monday morning.

The underpass was re-opened for cyclists shortly after 7am today, following a safety inspection by a specialist engineer.

Waka Kotahi Regional Manager for Auckland and Northland Stephen Collett says further work is needed to complete the repairs, which will require temporary closures of the underpass.

“Waka Kotahi is planning to undertake this work out between 9:30pm and 4:30am over the next three nights, in order to minimise disruption for cyclists.

“Waka Kotahi acknowledges that the initial response to the incident and the communication with those affected by the closure of the underpass was not as prompt or as clear as it should have been. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, and we’re reviewing our response to the incident to ensure we learn from it going forward,” Mr Collett says.
