If you identify as Matāwaka and are interested in promoting economic, environmental, cultural and social issues of significance for Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau, you or someone you know may be interested in standing for the Independent Māori Statutory Board (IMSB).
The IMSB was established in 2010 under the Local Government Act 2009 to promote issues of significance for Mana Whenua groups and Matāwaka in Tāmaki Makaurau. The Board acts to ensure Auckland Council takes the view of Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau into account when making decisions and assist with making sure that Auckland Council acts in accordance with the Treaty of Waitangi.

The IMSB is formed from seven Mana Whenua group representatives and two Matāwaka representatives. Each representative serves a term of three years. The members are appointed by a Mana Whenua Selection Body established by the Minister for Māori Development.
Matāwaka
Matāwaka is defined in the Local Government Act 2009 as Māori living in the Auckland region who are not in a Mana Whenua group.

Eligibility criteria for representatives
There are specific eligibility criteria as well as attributes and skills that the selection body is looking for in appointing the Matāwaka representatives:
- Knowledge and expertise in te reo, tikanga, mātauranga
- Knowledge of the geographic and socio-political makeup the whole of Tāmaki Makaurau area
- Knowledge and expertise in areas relevant to local government (for example, resource management, public policy, planning, transport, finance, etc)
- Strong networks and established relationships within mana whenua and local and central government spheres, and
- Acknowledged as leaders within their own community.
These criteria need to be found across the IMSB as a whole. It is not necessary for any individual IMSB member to meet all the criteria.
The selection body will consider nominees who are not Matāwaka, however, nominees must have the ability to represent and promote issues of significance for Matāwaka.

The selection body is calling for nominations and supporting information to be submitted no later than 5pm, Friday 7 October 2022.
