Night-time State Highway 1 travellers in the South Waikato can expect delays of up to 10 minutes next week while work continues on safety improvements.

Waka Kotahi Z Transport Agency contractors are installing central and side flexible safety barriers on a 4.5km stretch of SH1 between Maroa and Tram Road, south of Ātiamuri.

The stop-go traffic flow is required for four nights from 19-22 September while temporary steel barriers are put in place to protect workers and provide a safety zone.

This is the first of several sites on SH1 between Piarere and Taupō to get central and side barriers and this stage will finish early next year. A 50km/h temporary speed limit is in place through the site at all times.

This work is part of the Road to Zero strategy, which underpins the vision Waka Kotahi has of zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads. Road safety barriers help keep vehicles on the road, out of opposing lanes, and protect road users from roadside hazards like power poles and trees.
