Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises road users the northbound and southbound lanes on State Highway 1 (SH1), around and south of the Hampton Downs interchange (excluding off and on-ramps), will be without expressway lighting from now until November 2022 while work continues on upgrading the state highway.

To make this section of SH1 safer and more consistent with the rest of the Waikato Expressway, we’re installing roadside barriers to prevent people from running off the road. The work ensures it meets the necessary design and safety standards for drivers travelling at 110km/h.

Before the new barrier can be installed, the road needs to be widened and the existing roadside lights repositioned so the new barrier can be installed.

From now until November 2022, the crew will be removing existing lights and installing new ones and installing road side barriers along the northbound and southbound section.

A temporary speed limit of 70km/h and temporary barriers reducing traffic from 2 lanes to 1 lane in each direction is in place, to ensure safety of road users and road workers.

We thank people for their patience while this work is underway.
