Organisations are increasingly collecting peoples sensitive personal information and analysing it using biometric technology. We are now seeking the views of New Zealanders on biometrics and their use in Aotearoa New Zealand in response to our consultation paper here. The consultation document features a set of specific questions for people to answer aimed at building on information first presented in an OPC position paper on biometrics released last year. What is biometric technology?Biometric technology involves the automatic recognition of people based on their biological or behavioural features. This could include analysing peoples faces, eyes (iris or retina), fingerprints, voices, signatures, keystroke patterns, odours, or even the way they walk. Biometric information is uniquely precious to each of us, and there is growing concern about the level of regulation covering its use.
