New trees have provided a welcome addition to the Oneroa landscape.
Planting has happened in a variety of spaces over the last month, featuring a range of larger grade specimen trees from coastal mahoe to kōwhai.
The council planting has been done in anticipation of the unavoidable removal of a number of trees which will take place in order to build new public toilets. The purpose of the new toilets is to cater to public demand in Oneroa village, especially during summer months.
“The toilets are a board response to public demand. It’s a fair hike, particularly for the less mobile, to get from one end of the village to the other near the Citizens Advice Bureau,” says local board chair Cath Handley.
“On the other hand, the board is committed to protecting the natural environment and reaching a net carbon positive footprint by 2040. This is a great solution that helps to achieve both goals.”
The proposed construction of the toilet block will start in January 2023. The site will be in the reserve at 159A Ocean View Road adjacent to the main bus stop in Oneroa, and opposite the Red Cross building. Because the reserve has little space to do additional planting, other reserves and Council land within the vicinity have been used to ensure the number and quality of plants in the area grows rather than diminishes.
