A significant landslip on State Highway 58, Haywards Hill, means the route is closed to all traffic.

The slip occurred just before six pm, Friday 12 August, opposite the power substation.

Mark Owen, Regional Manager Wellington and Top of the South, says a substantial amount of material has come down.

“This is a big job, and the slip material will take some time to remove. Our contractors are working through the night to do this. State Highway 58 will remain closed while this work is carried out”.

Mr Owen says the recent wet weather has saturated the ground across the region, making land slips like this more likely.

“We know the road closure will be frustrating for road users and those who live in the area. Please be patient as our contractors are working as quickly as they can to clear the slip and restore the road”.

Mr Owen says the stability of the slope where the slip occurred needs to be thoroughly investigated and safety assured before the highway can be reopened to traffic.

Hugh Duncan Street residents can access their homes from State Highway 2. However, Mount Cecil Road residents will have to use State Highway 1 and travel from the Pauatahanui end of SH58.

Waka Kotahi will update the highway’s status tomorrow at midday.
