Auckland Council is on the lookout for 20 summer rangers to join the regional parks team for a three-month paid internship this summer.
Applications are now open for students who have recently graduated or are currently studying conservation, environmental management, landscaping, recreation, tourism, or other relevant areas who want to gain valuable on-the-job experience in Auckland’s most beautiful office.
“This is the perfect summer job for students who see our parks as our greatest taonga and love to help people connect with nature,” says Auckland Council’s Regional Parks Manager Scott De Silva.
“Summer is the busiest time of the year for our regional parks with an influx of visitors and holidaymakers, so summer park rangers play a key role in supporting our team and helping people make the most of Auckland’s beautiful regional parkland.”
But the role is not just about being a good kaitiaki (guardian). Applicants also need to have good people skills as interacting with park visitors daily is a key part of their role.
No two days are the same with summer rangers assisting with customer service, educating visitors, weed and pest control, kauri dieback management, nursery work, farming, track maintenance, and machinery handling.
“This helps the summer rangers gain invaluable knowledge across a wide variety of tasks. The skills the summer rangers pick up through the internship programme will last them a lifetime,” says Scott.
It is the perfect way to kick off your ranger career.
“We have had many summer rangers complete their internship who return as full-time rangers at the end of the placement”.
