Motorists are asked to take care after heavy rain today caused an underslip on State Highway 3 near Piopio.

The road is down to one lane between Mangarongo and Paekaka roads and is being controlled by traffic lights with delays of 5-10 minutes.

A geotechnical engineer has inspected the slip and further investigations will be completed in the coming days to determine a plan for reinstating the road.

Further south, SH3 remains under traffic light stop/go south of Awakau Road in the Awakino Gorge, due to a slip, with delays of approximately 5-10 minutes.

Crews are monitoring both sites 24/7 to ensure the safety of road users.

People are asked to plan ahead, allow extra time and follow the directions of traffic management staff and signs.

Waka Kotahi thanks motorists for their patience and will provide further updates over the coming days.
